Experienced Fifa referee Theresa Bremansu was viciously assaulted by alleged prisons officers in mufti after a Normalization Committee Women’s Special Competition (NCWSC) match involving Prisons Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies on Sunday.
The fixture, a first semi-final clash held at the Army Park in Sunyani, saw visiting Ampem Darkoa pip their hosts 1-0.
But the incident did not just start at the end of the game. It was preceded by a couple of stoppages for which referee Bremansu is said to have signaled she was abandoning the game over threats from some spectators.
Per eye witness reports, the referee was attacked by these unknown persons believed to support the defeated home team. These individuals were allegedly angered by the additional time added on allowed by the referee as the game was drawing to its end.
“As the game was going on, there were like some threats from the supporters so at a point in the second half the referee [Theresa Bremansu] decided not to continue the game but some of the [Prison] officers in uniform were able to calm her down and she went back to continue the match.
“After the final whistle someone attacked her from behind – a slap – and some officers rushed onto the pitch to rescue her. Yes there was an attack from an unknown person who we’ve heard is an officer but was not in uniform,” Akosua Frimpong a match venue media officer of the GFA explained.
Battered “like an armed robber”
Recounting her ordeal, Theresa Bremansu, who was left with swellings around the right eye, told Asempa FM Monday:
“Following the final whistle, a guy in black came to hit me with a cane and I asked why he did that. Sensing danger, I retaliated by stabbing him with a pen I had on me in self defence.”
She continued: “So while the Prison officers were coming towards us another guy in blue and white (pictured below) gave me a slap from behind. He really beat me.
“I cried for help but nobody came to my rescue. I called for his arrest and nobody moved a finger. They all saw this man beating me up. I was beaten like an armed robber.”
“While at it, their masseur [Prisons Ladies team] said that was small and I should have been killed,” Bremansu added.
