Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has come under fire from the Cycling fraternity for failing to honour a meeting with the vice-president of its world governing body, Dr. Wajih Azzam, who was in the country recently.
Mohammed Shaaban, the Technical Director of the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), expressing his frustrations to Kasapa Sports said his outfit had used all modes of communication to set up a meeting between the Minister and Dr. Azzam who doubles as the First Vice-President of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and President of the African Confederation to deliberate on the way forward for Ghana Cycling and also African Para Cycling championship to be held in the country as qualification to Tokyo 2020.
According to him, all memos, SMS, WhatsApp messages and phone calls throughout Dr. Azzam’s visit from September 11 to 14 were ignored by the Minister.
“It’s a very painful experience that the whole UCI and African Confederation President was snubbed by the Minister.
“Dr. Azzam came to Ghana just to meet the Youth and Sports Minister to have a thorough discussion with him on the sport but sadly the Hon. Minister failed to meet him.
“The coming of Dr. Azzam was very crucial to us and the country at large so we put it into writing by sending a memo to the Minister to alert his outfit.”
Shaaban further alleged: “God only knows how many messages and calls we sent to Hon. Asiamah but he overlooked. What disheartens me is that you will see that he has read my WhatsApp messages but disregards it.
“I was even expecting the Minister to appoint his deputy or anybody from his office to meet him. But [sighs] this is too painful. I remember Dr. Azzam told the NSA Acting Director General Majeed Bawa that he was able to meet all Sports Ministers in all the African countries he has visited with the exception of Ghana,” he added.
