Boxer Jessie Lartey has won Ghana a first medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games despite losing his bout in the Men’s Light Welter (64kg) semifinal Friday morning.
The 25-year-old lost by unanimous decision with the judges scoring all five rounds – 30-27, 29-28; 30-27, 30-21,30-27 in favour of Canada’s Thomas Blumenfeld at the Oxenford Studios.
However, Lartey’s performance in the division ties him at 3rd place together with England’s Luke McCormack who lost to Namibian Jonas Jonas in the second semifinal bout.
Jessie Lartey thus wins bronze for Ghana, their first at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Jonas and Blumenfeld will fight for gold and silver.
