Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah is confident a number of the young players in the new team he is building will be ripe enough to win the African best player award in the next two years.
No Ghanaian player has been able to win the accolade after Abedi Ayew Pele won for the third successive time in 1993.
In recent years, Sammy Kuffour, Andre Dede Ayew and Asamoah Gyan only came close to winning it.
Coach Appiah who spoke to Starrsportsgh on the sidelines of the unveiling of the top three nominees for this year’s event was confident Ghana will soon be producing Caf award winners.
“My intentions has always been to build a team. So now, all the players are too young to win such accolade. But just give me 1-2 years and you will be happy with the results. All the new players will be matured and most of them will get nominated and even win the awards,” he told Starr Sports.
On Monday, Sadio Mane, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mohamed Salah were unveiled as the final three nominees for the 2017 African Player of the Year Award.
The 2017 Aiteo/Caf Awards is slated for Accra January 4.
