The first Ghana Open International Taekwondo Championships is set to start with 131 athletes from 15 countries in participation beginning Friday.
Italy, USA and Turkey are three non-Africa countries who have confirmed their involvement in the two-day event slated for the Accra Sports Stadium.
Spokesperson for the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Adnan Odartey Lamptey reveals the competition will provide participants an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics.
“When an athlete attends an international Championship sanctioned by World Taekwondo, there are some incentives to that. When you fall within the first six, you gain an automatic qualification to the Olympic Games that’s why athletes are very serious about this tournament.
“This is the first individual championships in sub-Saharan Africa,” he told starrsportsgh.com.
Ahead of the competition, the Ghana Taekwondo Federation with support from their sponsors have renovated the sports hall of the stadium with an amount of GH¢60,000.
The Ghana Open International Taekwondo Championships begins at 8am each day.
