Government has pegged the senior national team, the Black Stars’ match bonus at $5,000 for the Africa Cup of Nations preparations and tournament participation as well as the World Cup qualifiers.
This was confirmed by deputy Sports Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide in Kumasi on Monday.
He said: “After all the talks and consultations, we have come to the conclusion that the Black Stars will take the cedi equivalent of $5,000 as winning bonus for qualifying games to the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.
“The same amount has also been standardized for the Nations Cup tournament proper.”
The Minister explained that the amount is what government can afford from its financial standing and believes the players will accept the new standard in good faith.
“We all know the economic difficulties we are faced with these days. The debt we inherited at the Sports Ministry is about GH¢50 million.
“Anyone will always desire for more but this is what we can afford. We know our boys are very patriotic and are playing for the love of our nation. We want to avoid the tendency of deceit, sweet talk and continue to pile up debt for the country,” Hon. Hadzide explained
“We will soon announce a comprehensive bonus structure for all sporting disciplines in the country so as to be clear with everybody,” he added.
The Black Stars recorded a resounding victory over Ethiopia on Sunday, beating them 5-0 in their first step to secure a slot at the 2019 Afcon to be hosted by Cameroon.
