Accra Hearts of Oak’s chase for the top of the league table suffered a heavy blow as WAFA SC handed the Ghanaian giants one of their heaviest defeats, 5-0 in history at the Sogakope Red Bull Arena on Sunday.
Goals from Majeed Ashimeru and Abdul Wahab Ibrahim in the 28th minute and 4th minute of first half additional time handed the Academy boys a 2-0 lead at the break.
WAFA made it 3-0 in the 50th minute through Daniel Lomotey. Right-back Caleb Amankwaah added another on the hour mark before Lomotey quickly added the final goal right after restart from a powerful shot.
WAFA go top on 35 points while the Phobians remain third with 27.
Asante Kotoko had to rely on a Sadick Adams penalty to earn a point at home against Great Olympics. The visitors had taken a 50th minute lead through Daniel Agodorme. Kotoko finished the game with 10 men as a result of red card to goalkeeper Ernest Sowah who handled the ball outside his penalty area in an attempt to deny Olympics a goal.
AshantiGold continued their pursuit to leave the relegation zone with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Ebusua Dwarfs. Richard Ocran netted twice from the penalty spot with Hans Kwofie scored in between in the match day 17 clash at the Len Clay Stadium.
Bechem United defeated league holders Wa All Stars 2-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour with a goal in each half from Hafiz Konkoni and Amed Toure. It was the latter’s 7th of the campaign.
Second half goals from Emmanuel Otoo and Farouk Mohammed saw Elmina Sharks defeat Medeama SC 2-0 at the Nduom Stadium while Tema Youth and Liberty Professionals settled for a barren stalemate at the Tema Stadium.
Inter Allies also travelled up North to hold Bolga All Stars to a 1-1 draw at the Utrecht Park. A Latif Abubakar own goal in the 3rd minute gave the visitors the lead before Ibrahim Giyasu found the equalizer in the 18th minute.
On Saturday, Berekum Chelsea defeated Aduana 3-2 at the Golden City Park. Alfred Okai Quaye hit a hat-trick with the visitors scoring through Zakaria Mumuni and Bright Adjei.
Match day 18 of the 2016/17 GHPL have been fixed for Friday, June 9.
